State funding continues for local nonprofit

From Channel 12 TV (article here…no video):

Store to Door is one of few services or programs deemed “essential” during Minnesota’s ongoing government shutdown. A court-appointed special master, who determines what services will continue during the shutdown, recommended the state continue funding the program.

“We really are an essential service,” says Store to Door Executive Director Mary Jo Schifsky. “People are not going to get food if we don’t bring them food.”

Store to Door serves about 1,300 clients a year. According to Schifsky, more than a third of Store to Door clients are over 85 years old and about 70 percent live below federal poverty guidelines. The clients live on their own and can cook on their own, but they are unable to get to the store and shop on their own.

The entire process of bringing clients their groceries takes volunteers and staff about two-and-a-half hours. Volunteers generate a shopping list with each client and shop for the items. Paid drivers deliver the groceries to the client’s home. The client pays for their own groceries.

Store to Door receives about $38,000 a quarter in state funds through the State Nutrition Support Service fund and the State Nutrition Expansion fund. If the state cut off these funds during the shutdown, Store to Door would have had to cut the roughly 400 clients subsidized by the grants.

“The clients that qualify for that are predominantly over the age of 85 and they have a self-reported income of under $900 a month,” says Schifsky. “These are people that are living under the federal poverty level.”

She says with Store to Door able to continue its full services, it helps our most vulnerable neighbors keep their dignity and independence.

“We allow our clients choice,” says Schifsky. “We want to, if possible, provide some level of dignity.”
